The Six Pillars

The Six Pillars

The Southport Learning Town initiative has a number of Pillars on which it is to be built and through which it will rise. The Six Pillars are:
  1. Lifelong Learning for All
  2. Sustainability & Climate Action Education
  3. Innovation and Digital Literacy
  1. Community Well-being and Inclusion
  2. Cultural Heritage and Local Identity
  3. Partnerships and Collaboration
These six areas will address the learning needs of all members of the community and all actions taken will be both valuable today and relevant in the future.
1. Lifelong Learning for All

Southport will ensure that learning is accessible, inclusive and enjoyable with opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. This will be achieved through formal education, community-led initiatives, vocational training and access to digital platforms. The town will open-up and create spaces for intergenerational learning and to promote skill-sharing by learning from each other.

2. Sustainability & Climate Action Education

Southport will be a model of how learning can drive sustainability. Learning providers, community groups and businesses will collaborate on programmes and projects related to climate action, resource management and green technologies. The town will host regular events and workshops focused on environmental literacy, using our unique coastal resources and environment, and celebrated Eco Centre, to empower its citizens to lead the way towards sustainable living.

3. Innovation and Digital Literacy

A forward-thinking town, Southport will embrace digital transformation by promoting inclusion, entrepreneurship and digital skills. The town will identify or establish digital learning hubs and learning spaces where individuals can explore and use new technologies. They will be encouraged to collaborate and develop skills for the future at work, within families and by contributing to a new ‘community newsletter’.

4. Community Well-being and Inclusion

Southport will foster a strong sense of community, ensuring that learning enhances personal well-being and social cohesion. Programmes will be designed to support mental health, physical fitness and social connectedness. Special attention will be given to marginalised groups and in encouraging their participation in the town’s learning ecosystem. Creation and promotion of aspects of wellbeing will resonate with Southport’s proud history of a place to visit to rejuvenate and feel better.

5. Cultural Heritage and Local Identity

The town’s unique local heritage will be integrated into its learning programmes, widely celebrating Southport’s history while looking confidently to the future. By preserving its cultural identity and fostering a sense of pride among residents, the town will create a strong foundation for its vision of a becoming the first community-led Learning Town. Community events will be held primarily for Southport residents and events encouraging visitors, extended to embrace local organisations too.

6. Partnerships and Collaboration

Southport will engage in dynamic partnerships among its providers of learning and education and also work with local businesses and cultural institutions. It will endeavour to look outwards too by working closely with participants in UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities to exchange knowledge, share resources and encourage best practices. In this way, Southport will secure a reputation that will position it as a key partner in the global learning family.
